Choosing a cricket bat comes down to five things: the ball you play with, your height, the weight you can swing comfortably, the willow grade, and your budget. Work through the steps below and follow the links to see matching bats.

1. Choose your willow

  • English willow: the standard choice for leather-ball cricket. It is softer and more responsive, and needs knocking in before match use.
  • Kashmir willow: harder and more affordable. A good fit for beginners, practice, and casual play.

2. Choose your size

Bat size is based mainly on height. The chart below is a general guide; if you are between sizes, the smaller size is usually easier to control.

Bat sizeApproximate player height
Size 34 ft 6 in to 4 ft 9 in
Size 44 ft 9 in to 4 ft 11 in
Size 54 ft 11 in to 5 ft 2 in
Size 65 ft 2 in to 5 ft 4 in

Short Handle (SH)5 ft 6 in to 6 ft 2 in
Long Handle (LH)6 ft 2 in and taller

3. Choose your weight

A lighter bat is easier to swing and control. A heavier bat puts more mass behind the ball but is slower to bring through. Pick the heaviest bat you can still swing freely for a full innings.

4. Choose your grade

English willow is graded by how the wood looks: straighter, more even grains and fewer blemishes mean a higher grade and a higher price. Lower grades have more visible marks but can still perform well.

5. Choose your budget
